The birth of J.A. Duarte & Filho
J.A. Duarte & Filho was founded 22 years ago, the result of a partnership proposal made to the father. The company’s name reflects its origins: José António Duarte e Filho, a direct tribute to the family basis of the project.
The company started modestly, with a small construction project in the centre of Lagos, involving the father, son and a servant – who is still part of the team today. This detail says a lot about the values of continuity, loyalty and human relations that characterise the company.
Nelson’s previous experience as a salesman was decisive in this initial phase. It allowed him to bring with him a vast network of contacts, enabling him to win his first customers and take the first steps in growing the business.
A comprehensive presence: from construction to management
At J.A. Duarte & Filho, Nelson takes on multiple roles. He is involved in every stage of the process, from planning to execution, with in depth knowledge of the reality on the ground.
This practical approach allows him to make informed decisions, understand the real challenges of the work and maintain close ties with the teams. His leadership is built on example, experience and proximity.
Challenging projects that marked the journey
Over the years, the company has accumulated projects with high technical and operational demands. Among the most notable, Nelson highlights:
- The refurbishment of BMW in Portimão, a project with extremely tight deadlines, operating 24 hours a day.
- The Sagres Finisterra warehouse, a ground – up construction project for the production of oysters and bivalves, with a metal structure and high technical complexity. Started in August, it was completed on 31 December 2010, in just four months.
Projects such as these reflect the company’s ability to respond to demanding challenges with rigour, organisation and a focus on meeting deadlines.
The team as the basis for growth
Nelson describes the team at J.A. Duarte & Filho as honest, serious and committed to detail and excellence in execution. The working environment is calm, based on mutual understanding and loyalty.
Over the years, several employees have left to take on new professional challenges, only to return to the company later – a clear sign of the strength of internal relationships and organisational culture.
Special mention goes to Andreia, who is responsible for the financial area and is Nelson’s right – and woman in managing the company. Andreia’s trust, organisation and support are considered fundamental to the sustained growth of J.A. Duarte & Filho.
Professional pride and recognition
Among the many highlights of his career, Nelson singles out winning the Excellence Award in 2020 as one of his greatest sources of pride – recognition of the work he has done, the consistency of the company and the path it has taken.
But his pride is not just professional. Nelson says that he has built the life he wanted and that, on a personal level, one of his greatest desires is to see his children continue the family project.
Beyond the work
Outside of work, Nelson leads an active life. He plays sports and values time spent with his family – a balance he considers essential.
When asked what he would do if he weren’t in construction, the answer comes naturally: he would probably continue working in sales, where he has always felt comfortable dealing with people and moving around
