Villas
Location
Monte Lemos - Praia da Luz - Lagos | Algarve
Located on the peaceful Praia da Luz beach, with the sea as a backdrop and the Atlantic breeze enveloping every detail, Mr. Bekker’s villa is more than just an engineering and architectural project – it is an example of how conscious design and innovative construction solutions can go hand in hand with sustainability.
In a setting where the coastal environment imposes specific technical requirements, such as moisture resistance and durability of materials, choosing the right methods and resources was crucial to creating a home that is ready for the present and the future.
Lightweight innovation for big results: Cobiax technology
Among the solutions adopted, Cobiax technology stands out, an innovative system that replaces part of the concrete in slabs with hollow recycled plastic spheres. By integrating these “light cores” into the slab, the volume of concrete required is reduced by around 25 to 30%, also reducing the amount of steel used.
This process has multiple advantages:
- Lower structural weight, allowing greater architectural design freedom;
- Material efficiency, with reduced consumption of natural resources;
- Lower carbon footprint, thanks to reduced emissions associated with concrete production.
In Mr. Bekker’s home, this technology not only contributed to optimized structural performance, but also aligned the project with best practices in sustainable construction. In a location where every intervention must respect the landscape and ecosystem, Cobiax proved to be the ideal choice.
Sustainability underfoot: cork flooring
Inside the house, cork flooring was chosen, a material that combines Portuguese tradition, technical performance, and environmental responsibility. Extracted from the bark of the cork oak tree – an emblematic tree of our country – cork is 100% natural, renewable, and recyclable. The extraction process does not damage the tree, which continues to grow and regenerate over the decades.
From a functional point of view, cork offers:
- Thermal and acoustic insulation, perfect for maintaining interior comfort in coastal areas;
- Resistance to fungi and moisture, essential in a seaside environment;
- Comfort and elasticity, ensuring a pleasant feeling with every step.
The choice of this flooring for Mr. Bekker’s home reinforces the commitment to a healthy indoor environment, where well-being and environmental awareness come together.
Building for the future
Combining the lightness and efficiency of the Cobiax system with the naturalness and performance of cork, this project demonstrates that it is possible to create a high-end home that is resistant to coastal conditions without compromising sustainability principles.
In Praia da Luz, this house is more than just a dwelling: it is a manifesto that engineering and architecture, when integrated responsibly, can respect the environment and inspire new standards for coastal construction.
